The Timbuk2 Classic Messengar bag is an awesome alternative to a backpack. The bag is really well made, and can easily handle a heavy load - bomber proof! I actually used one while I was in college, and found it to be very comfortable on my shoulder for both long walks and bike rides. It easily handled the wear and tear of my active college lifestyle.
