i own a set, after a year of solid use i have only had a problem with the shifter for the rear

Sram never really fails with they products. I have these on my demo and they are pretty bad ass ive only had a problem with them once and that was just cause it was brand new and the cables got loose sooo not the shifters fault lol. Theyve been great i had x-7 prior and both seem to be really smooth.

and they only sold in sets? i have an issue with just 1 of mine and therefore need to replace just the shifter for the rear...

Shifters are sold in sets. Never hurts to have a back-up...sure you will need it sometime down the road.
