I have had my Sidi Genius's for a year and a half now and they still feel and look as great as the day they came out of the box.
The carbon sole really does help deliver all the power through the cleats into your pedals. You might think it is just "marketing spiel" but I can confirm it isn't. By removing the flexing of your foot you know when you decide to put the hammer down, your shoes have your back!
The front two velcro straps hold extremely well and the buckle makes it easy to tighten or loosen the shoe while riding (does take a little dexterity first few times so suggest doing it stationery for starters)
I twinned my shoes with Keo Look pedals and I seriously have not looked back. Yes, they are pricey when you compare to other shoes found here but seriously, do yourself a favor and make the investment.

Is there really that big of a difference between carbon and the other hard soles? Is the difference worth the hundreds it costs to upgrade?

The carbon soles on the Sidi Genius 6.6 are not only extremely stiff but they also reduce critical rotational weight. If you are planning racing competitively any weight savings especially with a rotational component can mean the difference between the podium and middle of the pack.

I ride with carbon fiber soles and I have to say it's an investment worth making. Reduces rolling weight and Improves pedaling efficiency. Only downside is they're so stiff don't even think about walking more than a few yards in them...

Good to know. Thanks guys. I am not a racer, so I think I'll stick with my non-carbon Bontts. I swear this is a hard sport to avoid materialism!!!
