I probably should've posted this here instead of in the review section. Anyway, I'll reprise my issue here:
I do have one issue that I'm wondering might have to do with how I'm using them or if they're a problem with the pedals themselves. I often kick up a good bit of torque from a standstill to get going. At least half of the time the cleat simply slips out of the pedal. This happens with both pedals though it does happen more often with the right. I have no problems once I'm going and pedaling at a constant rate. No slips at all. Any clue why this is happening?

We recommend that you tighten the tension on each pedal. The VP R72 pedals have adjustable tension so you can keep the tension at a low setting when your first learning so you can get out easily. When you're used to riding clipless pedals it's best to crank up the tension so your feet are locked in to maximize your pedaling efficiency. Let us know how we can help.

All of our clipless pedals come with cleats including the VP R72's. The VP R72's use the Look delta cleat.

The VP r72 pedal uses the Look Delta red cleat. It's a great inexpensive option in a lightweight pedal weighing only 264 grams. The Shimano SPD style cleat is used on their mountain bike pedals like the Shimano PD-M770 XT SPD The SPD-SL style cleat is used on shimano road bike pedals like the R-540 Road Bike Pedals.
