Although most packs are water resistant to one degree or another you will want a cover in case you run into heavy rain or extended rain. These also work great for covering the pack at night so you do not need to store it in the vestibule of your tent.
The benefit of the osprey cover is that is has a slightly more dense nylon and is less prone to tear than some of the other covers on the market. Comes with a mess storage pouch that can be connected to the exterior of your bag for easy access).
In purchasing a rain cover make sure that you are buying the correct size. Don't just buy one that fits the storage capacity of your pack, also consider the items on the exterior, such as sleeping pads, tents, etc. and factor these into the size as well.
