A great inexpensive clipless road pedal is the VP R80. These pedals use a Look delta style cleat and are a great way to get rolling with a clipless system. As far as shoes go, we have some great options including the Shimano SH R151. Please not that you'll need a clipless road shoe to work with a road pedal. These style of shoes have a three bolt pattern to accommodate road cleats. In addition, we'll have some more shoe options from Shimano in the few weeks.

Another way to go is to buy a 2-bolt setup. Nowadays the 2-bolt setup is mostly used with MTBs but at one time it was also marketed for road bikes I use a 2-bolt setup on my road bike.

I have SiDi shoes and Shimano 2-sided pedals which provide connection on both sides of the pedal so that you don’t have to fumble for the connection that you will have to on a 3-bolt setup.

If you are new to clipless the 2-bolt setup is an easier way to get started. AND THERE IS ONE MORE BONUS: WALKING. Walking in a 2-bolt shoe is like walking in regular shoes. Walking in 3-bolt shoes is akin to a duck waddle.

I recently had a flat 4 miles out on a ride and didn’t have my repair kit or phone with me. I had to walk the whole way carrying my bike. Luckily the bike is carbon.

Even more luckily I was wearing 2-bolt shoes!

Price-wise the SiDi Giau shoes ran me $151.00 off the web from ExtremeSupply.com, I needed them in Mega size for the width and Giantnerd didn’t carry them.

The pedals I bought were the Shimano PD-M520 pedals $48.87 with tax at my LBS.

The origin 8 sport pedals will fit a variety of shoe sizes. Size 13 would be at the upward end of the spectrum.

In my opinion, you should go ahead and spend the extra 20 bucks on the VP M11 SPD clip in pedals. They're a lot more efficient because you can push AND pull at the same time. Also, the only sizing you have to worry about is the shoe.

I am a size 13 EEE. I have a similar pair of pedals on my Schwinn Le Tour. My foot fits just fine. You just have to make the straps the appropriate size.

What I find is that when I wear a shoe such as my Keen Commuters the shoe itself is so bulky that getting my foot in and out of the strap becomes more difficult then when I wear my Avocet bike sneakers which are more streamline in shape. Due to the geometry of different shoes you will find that you'll have to change the strap settings.

I have used this style pedal for 40 years on at least 3 bikes that I have owned and 2 that I presently own. Then again I also have Clipless pedals on some of my bikes. Clipless pedals are great but they require the added expense of a Clipless shoe. Another issue with Clipless pedals is that if you have a few bikes you have to have the same pedals on each or have a pair of shoes for each pedal.

Yes the Clipless pedals and shoe combination give a much more solid connection throughout the full spectrum of the pedal stroke then these will, but I have found that I can get both a very proficient down and upstroke with these pedals.

Depending on how you set up the strap they can also be easier to get in and out of than Clipless pedals. I find that whereas I can take one foot out of these and still have good control when coming to a stop, if I disengage only one foot out of my Clipless pedals balancing becomes extremely problematic.
