A u-lock like the on guard bull dog provides the most security for your bike.

A u-lock like the On Guard Bull Dog is the best bet to prevent theft as they are very hard to steal. Keep in mind that for every great bike lock there's also a great bike thief.

On Guard Bull Dog is a pretty good brand but what i did is just went to the home depot and bought a thick chain that wraps around my waist. That way when you buy a lock you can just wear it as a belt. its just as heavy and a lot easier to handle. I use it around my $3000 bike i ride to school with too lol.

The real answer to this is how much protection are you looking for and what are the circumstances in which you are leaving your bike unattended and feel it might be stolen.

This type of U lock is good to protect your frame and possibly one wheel but I have found that generally the U lock isn't large enough to get the frame and wheel and bike rack into the lock. It certainly cannot accept both wheels and the frame and bike rack.

Personally when I am locking up my bike I want the rear tire, the frame and the front wheel all locked to the bike rack so I use a cable lock. Sometimes, depending on where I am, I even use two: one through the two wheels, frame and bike rack, and then a second one through the frame and two wheels.

In NYC you’ll see all the bike delivery guys using super heavy chains on their big box store bikes, which I always found funny, but I guess it is all relational. To them those bikes cost a substantial part of their smaller income.
