The perfect helmet for more aggressive All Mountain

That's not just a hat rack on top of your shoulders. That's your most important piece of equipment. Protect it. You wouldn't be much of a nerd if you didn't protect yourself for the inevitable tumble while pushing into that turn or boosting over that rock garden. This helmet is the all mountain rider's dream. It provides a bit more protection around the lower back part of your head. Its quickly adjustable to size in back and vents like a champ. The removable visor is a nice touch, but you will be hard pressed to ride without it once you ride with it on. While not the lightest helmet out there, it protects like no XC helmet can. While not a full face helmet, it protects better than most other helmets and still gives you the freedom to breath unrestricted. If there were a 6th star, this is one of just a few products that I would give a 6th star to. Its my favorite helmet, and forbid that I actually have to use it (crash and smack my head) I will definitely replace it with another one. Heck, I may buy another one just because of the new super sweet colors!

Now this is what a bike hydration pack should be!

I haven't had my Raptor 14 for long, but I am thoroughly impressed with it! This is the first hydration pack that has real R&D into it. Its the small things that make all the difference. The bladder is super easy to fill thanks to its handle. The bladder also has a solid back to it so you do not get that typical bladder bulge into your back which is always annoying and seems to cause a faster sweat spot on your back. The ventilated back and shoulder straps also help with keeping you cool and avoids those embarrassing sweat marks on your back and shoulders. While I do not recommend using it while on the bike, the helmet holder is great, its super easy to use. I primarily use it while sitting the shuttle truck on my way to the top of the Porcupine Rim Trail or the Whole Enchilada in Moab. It holds the helmet nice and easy when in the truck so you don't forget where it is. They magnetized the end of the bite valve and the chest strap so it stays in place while riding and easily accessible to encourage you to drink more. As for the rest of the pack, it has tons of storage, place holders for tools and pumps and a storage area for glasses thats scratch free, makes this my new and favorite hydration pack. There are of course smaller versions and a bigger version for the guy/gal who needs to carry everything including the kitchen sink.

So comfortable and plenty of space

I spend a lot of time on my bike, in my truck going to ride my bike, or on a plane going to ride my bike. But I have to take my laptop (to stay up to date on Giantnerd and to maintain my website) among other essentials. This is the bag I take. Its comfortable, easy to pack, easy to access while still having it on your shoulder, and it doesn't dig into your shoulders, yet stays secure and in place for hours even while riding around town. While Chrome makes bigger bags, this one fits my needs extremely well. Its available in a bunch of colors, so you don' t match the guy next to you. Has some really cool features for adjust-ability and fit along with the cool seat-belt buckle for quick removal. I am no messenger, but this bag fits the needs of the messenger and cyclist alike as many of the needs of both are shared. This is the perfect bag for commuting to work. It'll hold a spare set of clothes, your laptop, and sits on your back comfortably even when pinning it through traffic.

How do these shifters work??   Micah, There are two levers behind the brake lever, one for shifting up and one for shifting down. The brake lever itself does not move like some shifter models do, the shifters on the Tiempo sit directly behind the brake lever. Definitely let us know if you have any further questions regarding this.

The best snowpack out there

This pack easily has a thousand runs on it, nearly 100 backcountry ski hikes, and tons of plane trips and it is still going strong. There are no signs of distress or excessive wear. I fully take advantage of all of the little compartments, the fleece lined goggle pocket always houses my sunglasses or goggles, whichever of the two that are not in use. You don't need the extra sunglass or goggle baggy when putting them in there. Its really quick to mount up your skis on the pack for those longer ascents and has tons of useful pockets. The pack is fully adjustable so its easy to adjust for over your puffy coat or for just walking around like a tourist. It carries plenty of stuff, from your digital camera, to your video camera, to food, ice axe, spare layers, and all the other necessities. If this pack every wears out, I will definitely be getting another one!

What do you want in a hydration pack?

High volume water capacity is the biggest requirement for me. I do not personally experience the water slosh that some do. Some bladders are a pain to clean. A removable hose is required for cleaning and easy replacement. Bite valves that do not leak and bladders that do not leak are mandatory. As far as storage, that depends upon what type of use. I have a small pack for hiking that will just hold a few bars and water, then a larger pack for riding. It holds tools, water, food, a rain jacket, spare tube, and many other items.

Anybody own this bike?   Dollar for dollar, Tommaso puts together some of the best bikes in the industry. Comparing the Tiempo to other bikes from Specialized and Trek, the Tiempo stacks up well, the only thing the Tiempo cannot meet with the other brands is price, its just not that high. The solid Shimano drivetrain, Tommaso components, and amazingly comfortable ride that steel provides is really the seller for this bike. Tommaso has really worked to keep the Tiempo at a reasonable price and yet it delivers a solid ride for new riders. If you are looking for something a bit lighter, take a look at the Tommaso Imola, just a little bit more and it drops some weight due to its aluminum frame. We have had a lot of very happy Tiempo customers. Please chime in other owners!

The perfect all mountain tire

I have run the High Roller for years. I sometimes run the Minion DHF, but this tire is on the front and back of my trail bike and has spent some time on the back of my DH bike. On the back of the DH bike, I run the race cut, but thats for racing only as it causes faster wear of the tire. These tires have spent countless days in Moab riding Porcupine Rim and the Whole Enchilada along with Monarch Crest/Rainbow trail here in Colorado. The High Roller sheds mud well, works great in most every condition, and rolls quick yet still has great braking. This is the most imitated tire in the industry. Every other major tire brand has a tire that tries to mimic the High Roller.

Road or Mountain Cassette?

It is definitely good to see parts like the SRAM DH cassette and Shimano's Saint groupo which are specifically engineered for the rigors of freeride and DH. Rennie had to have specially made cassettes that were machined from a single piece of aluminum rather than separate cogs or having a two piece carrier because he would twist cassettes. He holds the Australian power output record even above track guys and roadies. DH in my opinion requires a road cassette.

What is everyone riding?

Clinton, Yes I saw the write up on Jamie's bike over on Vital. Jamie is actually a good buddy of mine from the contest season. His bike is even more amazing in person. The aluminum front is so he can cut it, primarily so he can have his seat lower for contests, definitely not something the average consumer/rider would ever want or need to do. You could definitely run an uncut seattube. Running a short shock is a cool idea and works pretty well in a lot of applications, not always ideal on a VPP or DW link style bike, but can still certainly work. A carbon 4x, that would be a SUPER niche bike, but would definitely be cool.

A solid package for beginner to expert level DHer

Its definitely tough to beat a Mongoose, the bike or the animal. The Boot'r comes in two different versions. This one is intended to spends days at the bike park or hauling butt at your local race. With matching Marzocchi suspension front and rear, you know this thing is built for durability and sending it all day long. A solid build kit, without a weak link to immediately upgrade, this thing means business. Definitely look into picking on up if you want a high quality freeride/DH bike to take on your local shuttle, up to Whistler, or out to Utah for that big huck.

Great freeride/DJ/DH bar!

Just like the white version, but black. For the rider who likes to keep the murdered out look to their bike or just prefers good old black to white, these bars help set off the front end of any bike. Why go out and spend more than $100 on a pair of handlebars from a company when you get a comparable bar with better graphics and durability for almost half the price. I have been rocking these on my 4 inch slopestyle bike all year long, cut them down slightly for better clearance on barspins, and they have been great! They have survived big crashes, jumps, and alot of days on the bike at slopestyle events and out dirt jumping. They are strong, stiff, and low rise to keep the front tire hooking up on the high speed off camber. These are definitely tough to beat. Expect to be impressed with Shimano's new component line PRO.

From the town to the track

The Ninja, without a doubt, the staffs favorite bike. Whether we are mountain bikers, roadies, or hipsters, the Ninja holds a special place in our hearts. This bike won the Colorado state Kierin championships with nothing but stock parts and a slightly different bar for personal preference. Most of the staff keeps to the mean streets of Boulder on theirs though. Even with the hills, the stock gearing is great for cruising around town and works well on the flats and hills without the problem of spinning out. Available in any color as long as its black, this bike hides itself away from bike thieves, but keep a lock on it, cause this thing is HOT! Low key graphics help make this bike clean looking, nice, and simple.

Shorts or Bibs?

For me, out on the road, nothing beats a nice pair of bibs. The fit better and stay in place extremely well. There is also not open space out back between your jersey and shorts, plus the chamois seems to stay in place better.

Tommaso's Work Horse

This is probably Tommaso's best selling bike of all time, and with good reason. It is at an amazing price and is quite the package. You get WAY more than you pay for with the Imola with Carbon fork. The carbon fork is definitely worth the extra coin. It smooths out the ride, cuts some weight and just looks RAD! This is a great bike to start out your road riding on. The Shimano drivetrain is tough to beat and works extremely well. Just like the original Ford Model T, its available in any color you want so long as its BLACK!

Get Ready for the all new Osprey Packs hydration line

I was super pumped to see the prototype of this pack. These packs are gonna be sweet! The bladder is gonna be amazing. Osprey doesn't make products just to make them, they make them to fill a hole that is in the market. After 5 years of research they are ready. I cannot wait to get a Raptor 14 for big long rides. So much to say about these. I cant wait to see the production one and give it a thorough thrashing!

The chain to end all

I have been running this chain on my mountain bikes for years. I have yet to break one, its light and tough. There isn't much to say beyond that. If you want a reliable high quality chain that you don;t have to worry about, there is no other. You cannot go wrong with this chain.

THE tire

This is hands down the tire to run on your freeride or dh bike. I have been running this tire almost exclusively for the past 3 years. Sometimes I will run a High Roller rear, but this tire is great. There is no dead spot when laying the tire into corners like the High Roller can. The tire rolls quick, hooks up extremely well and is available in a variety of compounds, widths, and even as tubeless. I am a huge fan of this tire and have no plans to change to anything else for a long time!

Clinton, Thoughts on why the VPFree and Blur 4x were discontinued? What are your thoughts on the Driver 8? Jamie Goldman is rocking a Blur LT with a carbon rear end for his slopestyle bike, definitely says alot about the frame, but not sure about it for ripping tight turns like the 4x loved to.

You call yourself a mechanic and you don't have a bottle opener? Seriously?! Don't be that guy any longer. You already wrench on your buddy's bike, make him pay you in your favorite brew. This tool completed my tool box and I no longer have to be embarrassed when I can't open my beer while wrenching on bikes. It even says what it is on the bottom of the wrench if you have indulged too much. You will likely never wear it out and almost definitely never lose it, I mean come on, its YELLOW! Complete your tool box and show your friends and family that you are a biker and are proud of it. Drink and wrench responsibly!!!

3 Words: It's a Thomson!

Probably the most revered seatpost on the market. Its light, its tough, its super adjustable, and comes in tons of sizes. The Thomson Elite is great. I have run this post on everything from my roadie to my DH race bike. Its a great piece and something I keep each time I sell my bike because these last forever. They are machined instead of cast and is not only tough and light, but SWEET looking!

These are a great all day short

I wear these for longer days in the saddle. They do not have a chamois, but with a nice pair of shorts under are great. They are cool because after the ride, ditch the chamois, hop in the river, and they double as a pair of swim trunks and then dry quick enough to hop in the car to head out for a post ride brew. These shorts are extremely light yet still durable. These work great at the bike park as well as they cover my 661 Kyle Strait knee pads yet do not snag on them when pedaling. Oakley definitely did their research and hit a home run with these!

Perfect street and DJ tire

These tires just seem to last. More than 2 years of dirt jumping, cruising around town, and contests, and these are still going. I have beat them up pretty thoroughly and while they are worn down, they are still going strong. I may finally replace them this season with a new set. You wont regret going Maxxis, just be careful, you may never go back to your previous tires

The headset for DH and freeride!

I bought this headset after breaking yet another Chris King headset. Pressed it in and haven't touched it in more than a year. While a bit on the heavy side, its one of those things you don't have to worry about. Strong bearings, smooth, and inexpensive. This is tough to beat. I will be putting one on my slopestyle bike for the 2010 contest season.

New School Frogskins

These glasses help you get the girl. Been rocking em since the week they came out. I picked up the Ruby Iridium lenses with the clear red frames. Oakley optics never fail to have the highest quality lenses. I use these for dirt jumping duties on my bike and hanging around town. These are really light but still durable. They don't feel cheap or like you will break them, but hardly notice them on your face. Two thumbs up for the Jupiters!

A great option if you aren't crazy about a full suit

I have been running this core saver for about a year and a half. I typically only run a set of knee pads, a helmet, and gloves, but this core saver is almost forgettable when you have it on. It fits well with my LeAtt brace and still allows you to be mobile. You can still run elbow pads too. When you wear this you dont feel like a football player or like you are dressed in a SUMO suit, you can still maneuver around and have fun on your bike. Light enough for pedaling to your jumps, or an aggressive trail ride, and enough protection for riding Whistler Bike Park or racing at your weekend DH. Fits well under a jersey. I am 5'9" 165 and run the small/medium

Posted 02.16.10

Tough, smooth, and light

I run these pedals on my dirt jumper, slopestyle, and DH bike. They come with extra pins which are longer, so you have a choice for pin length, total number of pins, and as you can see from the picture, it has a lot of pin placement holes. These are nice and stiff so they dont spin like crazy when you drop a foot or throw your superman or no foot can. At less than 500g for the pair, they are in a group of just a few. These are really light for how tough they are. I have a 3 year old set that are still going strong. I havent had to rebuild, repair, or warranty a single one. These pedals are long term keepers!
