Totally agree with Robert. Everything feels different in the 29er realm. I was being sucked into the hype until I rode a friend's Redline 29er and it just wasn't for me. Personal preference plays more into this choice than any tech specs, and riding different models will help you make the ultimate decision.
Sounds awesome! I just bought a GT Carbon Force Expert from GiantNerd, and it should be here Friday morning....just in time for the 3 day weekend. Have fun out there!
Currently riding a 2005 Ellsworth iD until my new GT Force Carbon Expert arrives.

BIke weight Well, the Sortie 3 is 459.2 Grams. Couldn't find a weight for the Sortie 1, but I would add to the 459.2 grams of the Sortie 3 and you shouldn't be too far off. Hope this helped out.
These socks were great on my recent trail ride. I wore these with my Bontrager shoes, and I normally have wet feet, but these socks were great for keeping me dry. After going through a creek, I threw these socks over my top tube and they were dry in a short matter of minutes. Amazing comfort that stay in place and dont bunch up like normal socks. Will definitely stick with SmartWool for all of my future sock purchases.
The Dakine Campus pack looks great and is the swiss army knife of school packs. I use this in college and got many compliments the first day I had it in class. Every compartment is well hidden and the zippers are tough and durable compared to the average Jansport. One of the coolest parts to this pack is the rear insulated compartment that stores my energy drinks for the study days. The reason I gave this pack 3 stars is for a simple reason. The compartment for storing pens and pencils is poorly designed. The spaces for pens and pencils is simply too short for average sized pens. I tried 5 different pens and pencils and each one butted right up against the zipper making it difficult or impossible to zip the compartment. Such a great pack, but a simple design flaw really is a big drawback for a pack designed for school.
I used the Cryptic jersey the first day it came in the mail from Giantnerd headquarters. It kept me dry, and is ultralight. The first thing you notice about the Cryptic jersey is the quality of the materials used and the workmanship that goes into the making of the jersey. Graphics on the front and back of the jersey are not over the top as some other jerseys, but fit perfectly with the color scheme of the jersey. The only problem with the jersey is that it runs very large in sizing. In all other North Face apparel, I wear mediums and have always ordered the size with confidence while shopping online. This jersey runs large, as I ordered a medium and I definitely should have ordered a small.
The North Face Ultra 105 Trail Running Shoe is a perfect balance of quality, comfort and value. The soles of this shoe work great for the trails, as my feet felt very little shock from running gravel that I experienced in the past with my New Balance trail runners. Even if you don't plan on using these shoes for running through the woods, they look great and can be used as a daily walker. I got many compliments on these during the first few days of wear before I took them on the local trails. One of the small but really innovative features is the shoe-strings, which have extra material sowed in at different points that provide strengthened kinks to prevent knots from coming untied. These are great shoes at the MSRP, but the Giantnerd price simply cannot be beat!
I bought these gloves for my girlfriend during the summer while on sale, and she has already broken them in and isn't looking back. They look great, as she says they are "cute". Have held up extremely well, but I will still never understand as to why companies make the giant white sides on MTB gloves, got extremely dirty very fast.
Amazing top! This thing is my staple go to when it starts to get cold here in Ohio. Wear it by itself, or layer it when braving January. I love to wear this simply with a t-shirt over it when out at the bars. I have this shirt in grey and black. Could not be happier, as it doesn't stretch at the cuffs and neck like many of the cheaper long underwear out there. Please do yourself a favor however, and find this product on sale. Patagonia products are extremely expensive.
These products are great if you can find them on sale. Amazing comfort, as I received these along with the matching top from my girlfriend last Christmas and I did not want to take them off. While I wear the bottoms only on extremely cold days, the snug fit of the top makes it a perfect compliment to a t-shirt in the winter.
While this is a great shirt, the MSRP of $42 is completely unjustifiable, other than the Patagonia name you are buying. It's a great fitting shirt, as I picked up the same shirt in Moab, Utah last year. If you are looking for a shirt, then get something else. If you do purchase this shirt though, make sure you pick it up from GiantNerd, as it is at an amazing price.
Great crank. Lightweight and extremely durable. Why upgrade to the uber-expensive XTR groupo when I can stick with the tried and true XT that is only SLIGHTLY more in weight than the XTR yet extremely more affordable than the XTR line. You cannot go wrong with XT.
Recently, my brother purchased The North Face Diablo windstopper jacket, while I went for the slightly higher priced Cipher; my brother is jealous. The Cipher is a soft shell fabric, while the Diablo is the more 'plasticy' feel that is so common in the windstopper category. The Cipher is extremely comfortable and maintains 100% windproofing while also maintaining breathability. Performance is top-notch, as it has been 60 degrees outside and I'll still have my arm out the window while driving 70 mph, and the wind is non-existant through this jacket. Perfect performance aside, this jacket just has looks to kill.
While I don't own a dirt bike, I do own several ATVs and where the FOX Pawtector exclusively. This glove's fitment is unreal, and when pumping the clutch and brakes, it takes minimal effort because of the super un-restrictive stretchy meshing and palm grip on the PAWTECTOR. Worth every penny, and they last much longer than any of the Thor products I have used in the past.
I have worn these on many bouldering trips to Coopers Rock, West Virginia and even had them on plastic at the gym in Pittsburgh. While I have no complaints on fitment, these shoes are extremely comfortable, the durability of the exterior is questionable. One of my top eyelets came off after my 6th trip to Coopers Rock, and it's only a matter of time before it seems like they will deteriorate further.
Installed these grips on my GT after one ride, because the stock grips were the only complaint I had about the bike. These grips are the perfect medium between firm and 'squishy', and feel as if they will hold up for many rides. Extremely comfortable, and will purchase these grips again.
Thomson Elite Seat Post is not only a lightweight product, but this post has looks to kill. This seat post came standard on my GT Force Carbon Expert that I purchased through GiantNerd. I have had the bike on easy to moderate trails and have yet to have this post slip. I really have no complaints about the Thomson Elite Seat Post, and see no reason to 'upgrade' to another product.
The Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses are the best fitting frames for an active lifestyle. I have the Flak Jackets in all black with charcoal polarized lenses, and they give me a stealthy and sporty look. The fitment is perfect, and with the replaceable varying sized nose pads, everyone will get the fit they desire. I wear these frames when hiking, fishing or simply riding down the road with the top off my Jeep. Perfect fit, comfort, looks and quality make these an Oakley staple that everyone should have protecting their eyes!
Candy SL pedals by Crank brothers, is a perfect value mountain bike pedal for the beginner and mid-level rider. These pedals are extremely easy to clip in and out of, and the price with warranty makes this a great first time clipless pedal. I did initially have some worries with durability, as the materials seem somewhat sketchy, but after numerous hours on the bikes and smacking rocks and trees the pedals have held up wonderfully with no issues.
This pad seemed somewhat prone to puncture when I first purchased. I was proven wrong, as this sleeping pad has gone from West Virginia, Appalachian Trail, Moab etc. over the past year without any issues. Extremely lightweight and comfortable under my bag. Supports my medium sized frame comfortably, and provides great insulation from the cold ground. You can have the greatest sleeping bag out there, but without the Therma-Rest Trail Pro you are simply wasting your money on an expensive bag. Buy this pad!
Spring of 2009 is usually a time in which college students flock to Cancun or Panama City, but I took a different route and decided to road trip from Ohio to hit some national parks out west. No hotel rooms the entire trip, camping only in mid March. It got down to 14 degrees at the Grand Canyon campsite, but I was nice and toasty in my North Face Blue Kazoo wearing only a pair of shorts and t-shirt. I got into the Kazoo wearing long-underwear, but had to shed that layer because I was too hot. This bag is simply amazing at the comfort level experienced in temperatures that were below what North Face rated the bag for (+15F). I recommend the Blue Kazoo to anyone looking for a bag that can withstand below freezing temperatures. I even use this in late spring and fall with the bag zipped open, but would not use this for a summer bag as it is simply too well insulated. Best all around bag I have ever purchased, and this is true for many as North Face has been producing the venerable Blue Kazoo for manyyears.
If you want an all around full suspension bike that can be used for any situation, then look no further than the GT Force Carbon Expert. With a full carbon frame, XT groupo and FOX Talas-R fork; you have a lightweight goat that will climb effortlessly. I have taken this bike off a few jumps this past weekend, and the FOX Talas felt like a pillow with the 6 inches of travel. Ritchey PRO bars, Thomson Elite post...this bike is just a more than perfect upper-mid level full suspension bike.
The camo pattern makes this one of the coolest looking lids on the trail! I generally wear a M/L, but I have this helmet in a medium and it cinches up in the rear thanks to the GPS with plenty of room for a much smaller or larger dome. Very similar to other helmets offered by Bell, but this one just looks so damn good in camo!
