Rubber Patch

The rubber patch, contact patch or footprint of the tire is the area of the tire that has contact with the road or trail. The part of the tire transmits the force between the road/trail and the tire via friction. 29" inch wheel mountain bikes have a larger rubber patch than 26" wheel mountain bikes. This larger patch helps aid in traction for cornering and climbing.
